Production of international food documentary series From Scratch is well underway, with the NV Studios team on the road from the Philippines to South Africa, Scandinavia, Sardinia – and beyond.
Actor and Host David Moscow and the team started their journey in the Philippines this month, visiting Manila, Nueva Ecija, Mindoro, Quezon and Laguna to harvest rice and shrimp, make his own fish sauce and uncover the myriad uses for coconut. At one point, David was surprised to find himself well above the ground, harvesting sap from a coconut palm.
NV Studios CEO Damien Brown says that the company’s on-the-ground production team has been delivering some breathtaking footage of the From Scratch journey so far. “From putting a very complex international show together, logistically, to producing great content from around the world, our team is doing phenomenal work,” he says. “We’re already working on polishing up episodes and can’t wait to take From Scratch to the world with our global distribution partners”.
Producer Graeme Swanepoel says the team was amazed by the warmth and friendliness of the Filipino people and that they couldn’t have had a better introduction to the world of hunting, gathering and foraging than such a spectacularly beautiful country.
Created by Moscow and his wife Karen, with some episodes set to be directed by Chef’s Table’s Clay Jeter, From Scratch is an exploration of where our food comes from, helping us understand more about what we put in our bodies. With so much everyday food processed, canned, and prepared for our convenience, there’s no real connection to the actual source. With more conscious eating becoming more prevalent – think ‘farm-to-table’ or ‘eating local’, there’s an increased interest in how our consumption habits affect the planet, and humankind as a whole. The series uncovers the realities of food production today, the history of our food and the science behind it through interviews with experts across various fields.
From Scratch starts airing in North America on A&E Networks in October 2019, with worldwide distribution – managed by NV Studios – to follow.
