NV Studios CEO Damien Brown and Chairman Matthew Moodley visited Los Angeles this month to attend Realscreen West 2019 and PRODUCED BY, as part of the drive to continue the company’s expansion into the USA.
Eleven years since its inception as Realscreen’s Factual Entertainment Forum, Realscreen West has evolved into THE unscripted entertainment conference for the West Coast and attracts hundreds of delegates from around the globe for three days of panels, pitching and networking. With a focus on unscripted content, Reelscreen West is a place for sharing bold ideas that capture and challenge audiences.
“We had some great meetings with channels like Crime & Investigation and touched base with all of our international distribution partners,” says Brown. “The content landscape continues to change with streaming heavily impacting the way content is both distributed and consumed, and technology offering new ways of interacting with the content itself”. While the content gold rush is still going strong, he noted a demand for increased production value and a push for laser-focused casting to deliver maximum value.
The PRODUCED BY Conference is run by the Producers’ Guild of America (PGA) and held at the Warner Brothers Studios in Burbank. The event offered Matthew & Damien the opportunity to network with Oscar-winning filmmakers, Emmy-winning showrunners and their peers in the creative space during a full weekend of panels, sessions, workshops and networking events. The focus of PRODUCED BY is on scripted content and featured speakers including Ava Duvernay, Michael Douglas, Toby Emmerich, Nancy Meyers, Mindy Kaling, Michael B. Jordan and Danny De Vito.
“It was heartening to see that our scripted slate is already aligned with what North American buyers are looking for, which bodes as well for both the shows that we have in the concept and development stages,” says Brown. A proud PGA member, he was offered the opportunity to attend exclusive networking sessions and meet with his peers from around the world. “Obviously digital is a major focus of the modern industry, and the workshops we attended offered great insights into where we need to focus our energies”.
